POLARIS – Duo Kiasma
What could be more unexpected than the meeting of a cello and an accordion?
Through operatic reductions of Rameau, an arrangement of a Vivaldi sonata, and a transcription of one of Bach's English Suites, Duo Kiasma presents its debut album, released by the Brussels-based label Cypres. Belgian cellist Pierre Fontenelle and Luxembourgish accordionist Frin Wolter revisit three masters of the Baroque period through the distinctive pairing of their instruments.
The combination of the cello, the prince of classical music, and the accordion, a quintessentially folk instrument, may seem unexpected in this repertoire. But in these masterpieces of Baroque music, where every voice carries equal importance, the Duo Kiasma strikes a rare balance between its two instruments, which share all that’s truly essential: breath and song. Bow and bellows shape musical lines of both volcanic strength and the faintest fragility, revealing new colours while remaining true to the spirit of the original works.
The unexpected becomes inevitable.
